When does Bethlehem require a hand wash station?

Bethlehem requires a functioning hand-washing station at every temporary food facility licensed by the City Bureau of Health, which covers festival food stands, church picnics selling food, and catered public events. The station needs running water, soap, paper towels and a wastewater container. OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities on construction sites, and OSHA 1928.110 requires one hand-washing facility per 20 field workers in agriculture.

Those are the legal minimums. Our recommendation for food events is one Bravo per food line plus one per 10 toilets, because the vendor line and the restroom line form in different places.

How much does a hand wash station cost in Bethlehem?

A Bravo hand wash station costs $95 for a weekend event or $85 per 28-day cycle when it is delivered with a toilet unit, and $145 per weekend on its own because it takes a dedicated trip. Weekly refill and gray-water pump-out are included on 28-day rentals; a mid-event refill is $35. Pennsylvania sales tax of 6% applies.

Hand wash station questions

Do I need a hand wash station if the porta potty has hand sanitizer?

For a food event in Bethlehem, yes. The City of Bethlehem Bureau of Health requires a functioning hand-washing station with running water, soap, paper towels and a wastewater container at every temporary food facility, and states that hand sanitizer alone is not acceptable. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's temporary food license guideline says the same statewide. For a crew or a family party, sanitizer is enough.

How many people can wash their hands before it runs out?

About 350 washes per fill. The Bravo holds 22 gallons of fresh water and 24 gallons of gray water, and each foot-pump stroke dispenses 2 ounces. We deliver it full, and a refill mid-event is $35.

Does the hand wash station need water or electric?

No. It is self-contained: foot pumps move water from the fresh tank to the sinks and gray water drains into the lower tank. Place it on level ground within reach of the toilets and the food area.

Can the hand wash station be used in winter?

Down to about 25°F with the antifreeze mix we add from December through February. Below that the pumps can freeze. For Christkindlmarkt-style winter vendor areas, a heated restroom trailer with sinks is the better option.

Is there a cheaper option than a separate hand wash station?

Often, yes. A deluxe flushing unit with the sink inside costs less than a standard unit plus a Bravo and takes one trailer slot. The trade-off is throughput: a Bravo serves two people at once outside the toilet, which matters at a food line.
